Unless you live in Gauteng or have spent some time in the Johannesburg district, you will probably first think of Sandton City and its CBD when someone makes mention of Sandton, not realising that it is in fact an enormous area, consisting of far more than these two features, as impressive though they are.

Some time ago, the phrase “richest square mile in Africa” was associated with the advertising campaign of one of South Africa’s insurance and financial services giants, and today, Sandton City and the area’s CBD are universally and justifiably referred to as such.

Country living

Some 50 years ago, this area was pretty rural, consisting mainly of undulating grassy plains, small farms and smallholdings. Many of today’s baby boomers fondly recall the meandering horse trails along which they rode on horseback, next to the banks of the Jukskei River.

As Johannesburg expanded into more and more new suburbs, the area which is now Sandton featured many country estates, somewhat more sophisticated than the erstwhile smallholdings, but still providing residents with the best of relaxed country living, but with more modern utilities, services and mod cons. For quite some time, Sandton residents continued to enjoy a really laid back lifestyle – out of the city of Johannesburg, but close enough to get to work there with relative ease.

Mass migration

The majority of residents now work in or near Sandton’s CBD, since many companies migrated to the area more or less as from the 1990s. These include numerous corporate head offices (local and international), investment banks and other financial institutions, a considerable percentage of the country’s JSE listed companies and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange itself.

Business, commercial and residential properties offered for sale in the Sandton CBD and surrounding suburbs reflect the area’s desirability and affluence. The demand is great and new developments, extensions and upgrades are continuous throughout the area.

Several high-density, sectional title residential apartment blocks are located within the CBD, but most of the country estates and large properties once found there have long since made way for retail and commercial developments.

Some of the most prestigious properties on sale are very close to Sandton’s business hub, yet are situated in Sandton’s suburbs. As expected, they are downright luxurious by most peoples’ standards, going on the market and fetching premium prices when sold.
