Britain's top 10 most romantic villages

What makes a romantic village? It’s a combination of many factors: charm, character, escapism, rolling hills and romantic sunsets. Be whisked away this Valentine’s Day with our pick of the best villages around the UK. They are places to inspire you to move to the country, or even pop the question on February 14. Here you will find remote, coastal and picturesque places to live.

1. Portmeirion, Gwynedd

Portmeirion is full of tiny backstreets, attractive buildings and Italianate architecture. Clough Williams-Ellis bought the land on the Dwyryd estuary near his home in 1925, and it took more than fifty years to complete.

It is based on the fishing village of Portofino on the Italian Riviera. This magical place may be an ideal location to stay on Valentine’s Day with the famous Portmeirion Hotel.

You can live nearby in Borth-y-Guest, right on the coast, where a terraced home with three or four bedrooms can cost under £250,000.

2. Grasmere, Lake District

Rolling hills, waterfalls, and far-reaching views. The Lake District is certainly one of the most romantic places to live. Visit Cumbria says: “Grasmere is Cumbria’s most popular village, thanks to William Wordsworth (1770-1850). Today Grasmere has plenty of gift shops, and places to eat and stay.”

Properties in this popular village range from £200,000 to £1,750,000. Here is a Fine & Country property currently on the market for £1,750,000 in Grasmere.

3. Polperro, Cornwall

Polperro is among the prettiest fishing villages in the West Country, where you can walk along the beach, enjoy the artist galleries and local restaurants. There is a wide range of properties from hillside cottages around the small harbour, to small holiday homes that are perfect as a summer retreat.

Property prices range from £450,000 for a family home, to one-bedroom cottages for £220,000.

4. Bibury, Cotswolds

Who can resist Bibury, with its weavers cottages beside the steam, all built in Cotswolds stone? The River Coln runs through the village, creating a picturesque scene. The area is renowned for its outstanding beauty, including Castle Combe, Chedworth and Cirencester.

Property prices range from £250,000 for a two-bedroom semi-detached house, to over £1,500,000 for a detached family home.

Rye has enchanting tea shops, friendly restaurants, and cobbled streets. House hunters are spoiled for choice. With Georgian, Tudor and Medieval buildings, and property prices offer good value for money.

“There's lots to discover in Lacock village; quaint cottages, the medieval tithe barn, the old lock-up and the village church,” says the National Trust.  “It is a quintessential English village with streets lined with timber-framed cottages and shops.”

A stunning historic property near Lacock can cost up to £1,250,000. A three-bedroom terrace property can cost £200,000.

8. Port Isaac, Cornwall

“Port Isaac is a traditional fishing village with a vibrant local community in north Cornwall and home to the TV series Doc Martin starring Martin Clunes. It's a truly picturesque village with narrow winding streets lined with whitewashed cottages that head down to the harbor, where you can watch local fishermen landing their daily catch of fish, crab and lobsters,” said Visit Cornwall.

If you are looking for a romantic escape, Port Isaac ticks all the boxes.

A family home with sea views can cost up to £950,000, while a one-bedroom flat can cost under £200,000.

9. Ardfern, Scotland

“The little village of Ardfern stands on the Craignish Peninsula on the west coast of Argyll. Being the largest settlement on the Craignish Peninsula, the village has an impressive range of facilities including its own marina which boasts many yachting visitors from around the world as the town is the perfect place to explore the Inner Hebrides,” said Visit Scotland.

Property rarely comes on the market here, but you can find large family homes for under £350,000 or plots of land with planning permission for under £100,000.

10. Hambledon, Hampshire

Hambledon is the rebirth place of English commercial wine production. The village nestles along a valley and ancient riverbed running from the South Downs in East Hampshire. There has been a settlement in Hambledon for over 3,000 years.

This village stands out for its sweet country retreats and farmhouses, which are located in the South Downs National Park.

Here's one for luck. A stunning romantic town...

11. Tobermory, Isle Of Mull, Argyllshire

The properties on the Scottish Isle of Mull must be some of the most colourful in Britain. It’s a romantic fishing port. This seaside town is known for its colourful houses and as the filming location of children’s TV show Balamory. The port is always busy with fishing boats and the ferry to and from Kilchoan.

The vistor information centre says: “Tobermory was built as a fishing port in the late 18th century and is now the main town on Mull. It is a picture-postcard of a place with the brightly painted buildings along the main street to the pier and the high woodland-fringed hills surrounding the bay. The town has a good variety of shops, hotels, and other accommodation as well as being the administrative centre for the island.”

You can pick up small plots of land (half an acre) for £75,000. Alternatively, a three-bedroom house starts at £250,000.
