Ramsey is a market town in Cambridgeshire. The town grew up around Ramsey Abbey, a Benedictine monastery. The remains of the Abbey are now home to part of the town's secondary school.
Ramsey provides easy access to many surrounding areas, Huntingdon rail station is 30 minutes by road connecting the town with London in 50 minutes by train. Peterborough can also be accessed in 25 minutes and Cambridge 50 minutes.
The local secondary school, Abbey College is a dynamic and vibrant Academy Trust school for 11-18 year olds, set in 28 acres of magnificent grounds. There is also a local primary school, Ramsey Spinney Infant School, as well as numerous private schools in the Peterborough area.
Ramsey Rural Museum is housed in a 17th-century farm building and is a small museum dedicated to the history of rural Fenland life.
Every year, over the August Bank Holiday weekend, the town is home to 1940s Weekend, one of Britain's biggest living history events and is held in aid of several local charities.
The early history of the town is obscure. Ramsey is not mentioned in the Domesday Survey, either because it was part of Bury or because it belonged to the abbey that at that time enjoyed royal privileges.
The town has grown sufficiently over time and now has a population of 6,000. The town also has many shops, bars, pubs and restaurants as well as its own weekly market.
