St Ives is a pretty market town in Cambridgeshire, about 15 miles from Cambridge itself and 68 miles north of London. Originally called ‘Slepe,’ it was renamed St Ives after what were believed to be the bones of a Persian bishop - St Ivo - were discovered buried in the town in 1001/2.
St Ives has great transport links with the A14 running close by, with access to the M11 via Cambridge and the A1 at Huntingdon, 6 miles away. Huntingdon’s train station takes commuters into London within 50 minutes and a section of the world’s longest Guided Bus route goes through St Ives, taking passengers to Cambridge within half an hour.
The town provides easy access to numerous private schools in Cambridge, Peterborough and Kimbolton. There are also several excellent state schools, such as St Ivo and the nearby Swavesey Village College.
St Ives lies on the River Great Ouse and its bridge is one of only four in the country that incorporates its own chapel. Every week there are busy markets on Monday and Friday, plus a Farmers’ Market on the first and third Saturday of the month.
There are numerous picturesque villages nearby, including Hemingford Abbots and Hemingford Grey, both classic English villages steeped in history and charm. Every year there is a Regatta here which, coupled with festivals at Fenstanton and Needingworth, plus a Carnival in St Ives itself, combine to create a thriving local community atmosphere.
The properties in St Ives are very mixed, with many Victorian, Edwardian and period homes as well as modern and new homes across the local area.
