City Living: Focus on Hampstead

Hampstead North London Fast Facts

Hampstead is a beautiful part of North London, sitting just 4 miles south-west from Charing Cross and bordering Golders Green on the east, in the London Borough of Camden. This little village is well-known as one of the most affluent areas in the city, full of history, wild parkland, grand mansions and charming buildings, attracting high-profile individuals, artists and media figures.

Highlights and attractions

One of the greatest highlights of the area is Hampstead Heath, locally known as "The Heath", a 791-acre wild park with expansive green spaces and ancient woodland, sports pitches, playgrounds and even natural swimming ponds. The highest point of the Heath, atop Parliament Hill, offers views of some of London's greatest landmarls, including Canary Wharf skyscrapers, St Paul's Cathedral, and The Shard. Hampstead also includes Golders Hill Park, a beautifully landscaped park with lawns and areas for games, a café, a zoo and a butterfly house.

After escaping the city, meandering through the Heath's meadows, many ramblers take to one of the local British pubs, among the independent coffee shops, boutique clothing shops and organic artisanal food shops. This picturesque neighbourhood offers some of the best pubs in the city, including The Horseshoe, a family-and-dog-friendly pub, offering Sunday roasts and live music; The Holly Bush and The Flask, which are both full of character; The Duke of Hamilton, a cosy local space for great food and drink; The Stag in Belsize Park, with its trendy outside area and excellent Sunday roasts, and The Garden Gate, boasting one of the best beer gardens in the capital.

This little London village is ideal for family life, offering a vast selection of schooling for all ages, including community, voluntary, special, free, grammar and academy schools.

Commuting

Hampstead is ideally situated for commuters into the city, being only 5.5 miles from the centre, taking approximately 25-30 minutes by car, 25 minutes by transit and 35 minutes by bike. From Hampstead station, the Northern line offers links directly to Westminster or Southwark within around 30 minutes and to Shoreditch or Canary Wharf in just over 40 minutes.
