Cape Town, the legislative capital city of South Africa, has always held a unique appeal for South Africans. For those who have the financial means, the magnificent Cape Town suburb of Constantia is even more of an aspirational drawcard. According to some sources, Constantia is said to be one of the most impressive and sought-after areas in the entire Western Cape region.
Origin of Constantia
Amongst South Africans whose early ancestors were born and bred in this country, the overall allure of Cape Town is possibly due to fact that the Cape is where most people of European descent, in this southern portion of the African continent, have their roots.
Not long after 1652, van Riebeeck’s arrival was followed by the emigration of a group of French Huguenots, who sought a new home where they could practice their Protestant faith, free of religious persecution. Early settlers brought their ways of life and culture with them to this new land.
A glass of wine, anyone?
Van Riebeeck was of the opinion that wine could cure or at least alleviate the dire effects of the sailors’ scourge, scurvy. Many sailors died of scurvy during long sea voyages, due to a lack of fresh food and a very poor diet. It could take anywhere from a year or longer at sea for a ship leaving a Dutch port to arrive in the Cape of Storms, and that’s a very long time to survive without fresh produce.
It was in Constantia, one of the earliest settled areas of the Cape, that the Cape’s first grape vines were planted in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, the then Governor General of the newly established Dutch colony. Van der Stel named his estate Groot Constantia (Large Constantia).
Van der Stel passed away in 1712, after which Groot Constantia was divided into three separate estates, being Groot Constantia, Klein (Little) Constantia, and Bergvliet. There are now several renowned wine estates and vineyards in Constantia. Along with the other wine makers, Groot and Klein Constantia continue to produce world-class, award-winning wines to this very day.
