Franskraal at the edge of the Gansbaai area, is a seaside village that at its western extreme is hugging the neighbouring coastal town of Kleinbaai. Franskraal has a long sand-beach crossing the outlet of the Uilkraals-estuary, a well known birding hotspot. The Strandveld museum has the largest collection of relics of the HMT Birkenhead, that wrecked off Danger Point and several other historical items. The owners are local historians and marvellous story tellers who gladly take you on a trip through time. Though the “Groot Melkhout Trail” is situated right next to the Franskraal residential area, the presence of Franskraal close-by is not noticed anymore the moment one walks under the canopy of the Milkwood trees. The trail is a circular route of 2 km and it takes just about an hour to complete if the nature lover takes time to enjoy what the bush has to offer. Gansbaai is named the Big-2-Town after the numerous Great White Sharks that cruise in the waters on the eastern side and the many Southern Right Whales that can be seen in Walker Bay from the shores of Gansbaai between July and December. Gansbaai, exactly midway between Cape Point and Cape Agulhus, is ruled by the sea and floral abundance. Endless beaches and rocky shoreline overlook Walker Bay and Sharks Bay. Gansbaai is a mosaic of different habitats of the remarkable Cape Floral Kingdom, ancient indigenous forest, agricultural lands, vineyards, flower-farms and rural communities. In spite of the developing tourism industry, the fishing industry is still the economical heartbeat in Gansbaai. The fleet of fishing boats and the fishmeal factory in the harbour employ a substantial number of people. The Abalone farm, just outside Gansbaai, produce this traditional local culinary delight in large quantities for the Asian market. Gansbaai is the point of gravity, where the banks, petrol stations and most of the shops are situated. A newly built tourism office, is now at the Gateway Centre. There are various restaurants and pubs dotted around Main Street, in the side streets and the harbour. Tourists can enjoy the locally brewed Birkenhead beer in a bar close to the harbour while watching the fishing boats return against the setting sun over Walker Bay. Whether you come to Gansbaai to fish, dive, eco-tour, or simply to experience the beauty of the great outdoors, you can enjoy the opportunity to visit our unique and interesting communities. Gansbaai came into being in the early 1880’s as a result of the great fishing opportunities it presented. It got its name from the freshwater fountain in the harbour which was frequented by the “kolgans” thus Gansbaai or Bay of Geese. Gansbaai is the name for the area which encompasses the towns of De Kelders, Franskraal, Kleinbaai, Blompark, Masakhane, Pearly Beach and Baardskeerdersbos. This is an area ruled by the ocean and blessed with floral abundance. Towering over Walker Bay, the cliffs of De Kelders are known for the world’s best land-based whale watching. Around Dyer Island in Shark Alley adventure lovers can enjoy magical encounters with the Great White Shark hence the “nickname” Great White Shark Capital of the World. Birders, hikers and horse-riders know the unspoilt fynbos-covered hinterland of Gansbaai as one of the main sanctuaries of localised and endemic plant-species on earth and a refuge for hundreds of bird-species. Long stretches of empty sand-beaches especially in Pearly Beach are ideal for uplifting walks. Magnificent sunsets have rounded off every day since earliest modern man first sat in the Klipgat Cave 90’000 years ago. Visitors to the area are amazed at the amount of activities to partake in yet the area has remained unspoilt and is an ideal spot for recharging ones batteries. An area to explore full of secret wonders.
