Approximately 33 years ago, the Loubser family relocated from Malmesbury to Johannesburg. Being used to wide open spaces, finding a suited property for their household of six, was a tall order. However, they found their perfect fit when they viewed a property on a sizable stand, with its own grand swimming pool, ideal for keeping their young siblings occupied during the long and warm summer months. Fairland, an upmarket suburb of Johannesburg, was and still is today, remote from the busy city life.
The close proximity to the Western bypass (N1- highway), good schools and major commercial centres tipped the scales in their favour. Unbeknown to them at the time, living within the ring road has a huge advantage in terms of morning and afternoon traffic.
The home, built by the previous owner, also offered an array of expansion options.
With the Randpark Golf club just a stones throw away, the Loubser’s made the best decision of their lives and closed the bid.
After moving in, the expansion plan received all their focus. The vision was to enlarge both indoor and outdoor living areas, allowing mom and dad to become super hosts for family and friends alike.
A generously sized living room was added. Taking the cold winter months into consideration, they installed a built-in, slow combustion wood fireplace/stove in the living room. An excellent idea, in today’s terms, was the creation of “his and her” work stations, close to the living areas. The kitchen, fitted with pantry and laundry, was redesigned and has a beautiful view over the front garden, as well as Northcliff ridge.
Special attention was given to the ‘flow’ of the floor plans, allowing the occupants to move around comfortably. The living room and lounge form the centre from where doors open onto the covered patio and garden. Also flowing from the centre is the work space and kitchen. A gas braai with an extraction fan, and electrically operated security screen was fitted on the outdoor patio. Special outdoor blinds are fitted on the open sides of the patio for extra wind protection on cooler days.
Wood has been used over many centuries for the styling of homes. As a close-knit family who loved to bring the outdoors into their home, the heavy wooden front door, as well as the wooden window frames are evident of the natural resources used in the design. Combinations of different types of wood including Jarrah wooden beams supporting the high ceilings, built-in mahogany cupboards and bookshelves, oak ceilings are cleverly used to give the interior of the home additional zeal and warmth.
The architect used a modern façade with straight lines in the new design. The overall construction show signs of boldness and strength, which certainly match the attention to detail given to the ‘act of living’.
The property is perfectly positioned between manicured garden beds, filled with various trees, mature cycads and rose beds. The main bedroom of the original house was enlarged and fitted with a new bathroom. After spending almost a lifetime in this well-appointed home, they recall the many times of hosting birthday parties and special occasions, inviting guests to share their happiness.
The home divides the property in two with a front garden leading into the entrance hall (south entry) and triple garages. The living spaces open up onto covered patios which lead into the sweeping parklike garden towards the back.
The terraced, landscaped garden is a feast to the eye and brings joy to the soul. At night, additional garden lights soften the harshness of the dark corners, giving the overall property a new dimension. A specially designed and engineered water drainage system drains the water from the elevated garden at the back, to the water outlets in the front of the garden. The garden forms the background for an impressive display of birdlife, especially early in the morning.
The family enjoys nature in its true form; the mature Tabebuia trees producing yellow trumpet flowers in spring, the fragrance of rose buds and the shades of large indigenous trees all form part of the scenery surrounding their home.
One of the now, grown up children’s favourite spots, is the Lapa with its bush-lodge braai and boma, perfectly positioned at the back of the erf. The rear area of the garden is elevated, with views over Northcliff hill and Johannesburg City. Once the bonfire is lit, the entire household moves towards the back garden, enjoying a feeling of being in their own private lodge.
Mrs. Loubser smiles as she refers to the different areas where after-dinner coffee can be served. One of her favourite rooms in the house is the formal lounge area, overlooking the pool and terraced garden. She also used the front section as her reading room. The living room with its bay windows flowing out on the covered patio form the centre of the home when the siblings, now all grown up, come to visit. The living room can be seen as the meeting room of the clan, it is here where they watched TV, chatted and dined together on the adjacent covered patio.
The choice of furniture leaves the home with a rich atmosphere. Mrs. Loubser created a traditional family orientated lifestyle in the heart of this upmarket suburb of Johannesburg, where the streets are lined with trees, and the pavements covered with green grass.
Accommodation for their vehicles was not left behind when they planned the renovations. Utilising the existing traditional servant’s room and garages, the after-effect resulted in three garages with a separate outdoor room facing the front garden. A proper flatlet was included hosting the current housekeeper and a considerable and functional laundry supplement the already well-appointed kitchen.
Finally, a beautifully styled border-wall with palisade fencing between pillars, finished off with an automated gate, allows for extra protection and privacy from the outside world.
The beauty of this home is found in its perfect location, the clever positioning on the stand, the relationship between home and garden and the sensible flow between the various rooms.
