Best places to retire in the sun

Now that the warmer months are a distant memory, many people will be thinking of moving or retiring in the sun. Retiring abroad is more affordable than ever before so we have put together some views on why different locations are the best places to retire in the world.

Personal preference and family ties will affect ultimately which location appeals the most, but here are our top five best places to retire in the sun according to our very own Fine & Country international agents.

  1. The Algarve, Portugal :

The Algarve is already well known for being a number one destination for couples and families to go on holiday but it also is a great place to retire, especially in Silves and Lagoa.

The Algarve has so much to offer including the golf courses, beaches, markets and European lifestyle. The weather is fantastic, with one of the most stable climates in the world and 3,300 hours of sunshine per year. The Algarve is easy to get to with many low cost airlines and regular flights from many European cities.

Zoie Hawker, from Fine & Country Algarve, explains one of the key reasons why people retire to the Algarve: “Retirement income is not taxed, allowing resident foreign retirees to receive pension income in the country, completely tax free. The non-habitual tax residents’ regime is very favourable to individuals transferring their tax residence to Portugal. To qualify you must not have been registered in Portugal as a tax resident in the five years prior to the application. The scheme is therefore particularly attractive to retirees and has encouraged a rise in the number of pensioners’ taking up residence in the country.”

For those who are unsure about investing in Portugal before living in the area, the Algarve Senior Living Scheme allows retirees to stay for long or short periods of time in quality self-catering accommodation. This has the advantage of not having to commit to a real estate purchase before being totally sure that retirement in the Algarve is for them. Zoie says: “The Senior Living villages are a fantastic way to begin retirement with a community of friends, and medical support if it is required.”

  1. Marbella:

Although there isn’t currently a ‘trend’ to people retiring in Marbella, there are certainly numerous attractions to enjoying life here in your retirement. Loraine Murphy from Fine & Country Marbella explains some of the reasons why people choose Marbella: “The climate in Spain is still the driving force behind the retirement sector on the Costa del Sol. Eating in the beach bars at Christmas and taking morning coffee in a myriad of cafes does appeal to the retiree in cold northern Europe.  There are also daily flights to the UK.

Secondly sport is a huge attraction. The variety of golf courses on the Costa del Sol offers a range of membership deals to golfers of all standards throughout the year.”

“Finally, the current property market offers great deals in a variety of residences from penthouses to luxury villas and frontline golf townhouses,” Says Loraine.

  1. France, Cannes:

If you’re looking to retire in France, our expert agent in Fine & Country Cannes, Alice Watson-Smith, explains some of the reasons why:

“For centuries Cannes has been a much loved summer vacation destination for people from around the world and especially loved by those from the UK, and Northern Europe, in search of blue skies and guaranteed sunshine. However, people wishing to retire have discovered just how agreeable Cannes is “out of season”, from October to April. With 300 “sun days” per year, winter in Cannes is still full of sunny blue skies and the temperature seldom falls, below 12 degrees celsius. In addition, unlike many other coastal towns in the South of France which tend to “close down” over the winter, Cannes stays very much alive.

Restaurants are open, the famous fresh food market provides exceptional daily produce, galleries hold exhibitions and the boutique shops go into ‘sale’ mode. There is always something going on, with an atmosphere that is more village-like in winter, and a welcome change in scene to the busier summer months. Being only half an hour from Nice International Airport, with numerous daily flights to all the major international airports, Cannes has the added benefit of being extremely convenient for those not wishing to be too far from family and friends back home.  Culture, lifestyle and convenience are what push Cannes to the top of the list of places to retire.”

Sea View Villa in Mougins, Cote d’Azur, France, 12,000,000 €

  1. Australia:

Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are the three most popular retiree hot spots in Australia. Retiring down under remains an attractive choice for Britons due to the relaxed way of life and the chance to explore a different part of the world. From the Geraldton Peninsula in Western Australia to the South West Coast of Merimbula in NSW, there’s so many amazing places to retire to in Australia, so why do people choose this country?

Kevin Fine, Director of Fine & Country Australia explains, “Australia is a beautiful country with world-class beaches, shopping, walking and hiking trails, outdoor adventure and even skiing, so you’re spoiled for choice! Australia also offers easy access to Asia, NZ and parts of the USA like Hawaii.

“For many over-60s, the decision will come down to a few important factors, such as where your children and grandchildren live, what amenities are available, good transport connections and affordable housing. Good all-year round sunshine doesn’t hurt either. For this reason, Australia has always proven a popular choice, offering excellent leisure facilities and housing, low crime rates with good policing, accessible transport, relatively low cost of living, good climate, good medical facilities and a wide choice of shopping. Australia has a stable economy and political environment and is tolerant to all religions and cultures.”

36 Hudson Parade, Clareville Beach, 8,000,000 AUD

  1. USA, Florida:

Finally, The USA is another fantastic choice for people to choose to retire. 28% of Floridan households are 65 or older which is the highest state in the USA. There are many reasons such as the climate, lots of social activities for retirees, the beaches, meeting relatives in Disney World and lots of waterside properties. Plus, everyone speaks English.

The main difficulty a British buyer will face when wanting to retire to the USA are visa requirements. There is no retirement visa to allow people to have permanent residence in the USA, so unless retirees already have the right to live in America they will struggle. Without a visa, retirees can apply for a non-immigrant visa and spend six months out of every 12 in Florida. While this may sound like an inconvenience, people who have made this lifestyle choice seem to really enjoy it. They often choose to spend the winter months in sunny Florida, and move back to see family and friends in the UK during the summer when the heat can become unbearable in the sunshine state.
