British pubs have been at the centre of community life, a place to meet, socialise and have a good time with friends and family for hundreds of years. But pubs are no longer just a place to drink beer, wine or cider. More and more pubs offer great quality food, with The Stagg Inn in Titley, Herefordshire being the first pub to receive a Michelin Star in 2001 and 15 other pubs out of the 48,000 in the UK have received the coveted award since.
When it comes to buying a property, it is not uncommon for buyers to ask about the quality of the local pub. Whilst proximity to a pub may not affect the price of your property (unless it has a coveted Michelin star), it may well play a role in the decision-making process.
Therefore, we asked Fine & Country agents and social media followers to tell us their favourite pubs in the UK. Here are the results.
The Olive Branch
Catherine Gee from Fine & Country Stamford really enjoys the Olive Branch Pub in Clipsham. She says: “It’s a superb local ‘eating’ pub and has previously had a Michelin star and is regularly voted one of the best dining pubs in England. They use lots of local produce and it is one of the most popular eating destinations in the area.”
Property nearby… Just across the fields is Holywell Lodge, an attractive period home dating from 1886.
Catherine explains: “The Olive Branch is Holywell Lodge’s local! The pub is just a short drive or longer walk across the fields, so it is a key selling point for this property.”
The house, which benefits from lovely rural views over the surrounding countryside, has an extension added in 2005.
Pipe and Glass
Dating back to the 15th century, the Pipe and Glass Inn stands on the site of the original gatehouse to Dalton Park, still the residence of Lord Hotham. It was here that visitors to the ‘great house’ would be offered hospitality and lodgings during their stay. The old gatehouse was eventually replaced by the present building, part of which is 17th century.
The Pipe and Glass Inn was awarded East Yorkshire’s first and only Michelin star in 2010,and has retained it ever since. It is the Good Food Guide’s County Dining Pub of the Year 2014.
Property nearby… On Hill Bridge Road sits this property, which offers five reception rooms, four bedrooms and two bathrooms, and a further wing with its own kitchen/bathroom facilities which could be adapted to provide a “granny flat” style self-contained apartment.
A particular feature of the property is a large covered barbeque outdoor living area set within the rear courtyard.
The Bhurtpore Inn
The Bhurtpore Inn has been owned by Simon and Nicky George since 1991, and it has been in the George family since the 19th century. It has been given several accolades over the years, and is currently listed in ‘Good Pub Guide 2015’ as one of Britain’s Top Ten Pubs for beer and also for whisky.
Property nearby… On the same road as the Bhurtpore Inn is a four bedroom detached house in the village of Aston with immense charm, character and appeal. Rowan House has very modern interiors, making it perfect for family life.
Yew Tree Inn
The Yew Tree Inn, Banbury, has received a wealth of awards over the years, most recently including The Best Cheshire Dining Pub for 2016.
They say: “We offer freshly made, locally sourced food from a menu with daily specials combined with informal service in a cosy and relaxed atmosphere. At the bar you’ll find an eclectic range of spirits including an ever growing single malt collection, plus an extensive wine list and an award-winning range of cracking real ales & craft beers.”
Property nearby… Spurstow Hall is an exclusive residence not far from the Yew Tree Inn.
It is beautifully maintained, and the expansive home includes a lake large enough for boating, a gym and swimming pool complex, a separate house for staff, tennis court, a helicopter landing pad and around 30 acres of land.
The Punchbowl Inn
The Punchbowl Inn at Crosthwaite has been named Cumbria’s dining pub of the year for two consecutive years. They serve the same high-quality menu throughout the building, both in the classic, contemporary style, formal restaurant and a traditional pub atmosphere in the bar area to suit different occasions. It’s a particular favourite of Sarah at Fine & Country Lakes & North Lancs.
Property nearby… Also in Crosthwaite is Damson Fell, which was named after the plentiful Damson trees around the area. The property is a fine example of Edwardian Lakeland architecture which has been extensively and sympathetically restored and improved to create a wonderful 5 bedroom family house in one of the most sought after villages in the Southern Lake District.
The Walnut Tree Inn
The Walnut Tree Inn is home to one of Britain’s most enduringly successful chefs. Shaun Hill began his career in 1966, working for Robert Carrier in his Islington restaurant. He went on to work in some of London’s most prestigious addresses including The Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge with Brian Turner and Blakes in South Kensington, and now works in Abergavenny’s Walnut Tree.
This beautiful stone house with equestrian facilities is not far from the Walnut Tree. Dan y Skirrid Farm has been much improved over the last eight years by the present owners including refurbishment of the main house and gardens and upgrading of the equestrian facilities.
The farm is located within the Brecon Beacons National Park and has 360-degree mountain views.
There is currently only one Michelin-starred pub in London, and that is the Harwood Arms in Fulham. Hidden away in the back streets of Fulham, they offer award-winning food and wine in a casual and relaxed setting, championing the very best British produce with a focus on game and wild food.
Property nearby… Also in Fulham is this five-bedroom terraced house on Lalor Street. Arranged over five floors, both the bedrooms and living spaces have been carefully configured to maximise the available space.
The basement level has a large family/media room which has been cleverly divided with large sliding doors which open onto a separate space which could be used as a playroom or study area.
The Hare and Hounds
Janie O’Shea from Fine & Country Grantham enjoys The Hare and Hounds in Fulbeck. It is a 17th-century Grade II Listed public house overlooking an attractive village green, close to the historic church of St Nicholas.
The Inn houses a well-stocked bar with a finely selected choice of wine, ales and spirits. A blazing log fire warms the pub in the height of winter, and an outside eating area is popular during the warm, balmy evenings in the summer months.
Property nearby… Just across the road from the Hare and Hounds is The Old Rectory. Dating back to 1893 this substantial former Rectory occupies a mature elevated position with far reaching views across the Trent Valley.
The house features a grand entrance hall, drawing room with fireplace, and a superb conservatory occupying most of the western elevation and opening onto a terrace, which looks over the grass tennis court.
The Brookmans is a community hub serving fresh seasonal produce. They have regular events in the pub to draw in local people, like vegetarian nights, gin tasting and quiz nights.
The eatery is warm and welcoming with its British Racing Green leather upholstery and hand-made silk lampshades. On the walls hang historic posters from the Metroland era when Brookmans Park was built, part of the hugely optimistic garden suburb movement.
Property nearby… Close by is this grand house steeped in history. Moffats Farm is known as the oldest house in Brookmans Park, having been built in around 1550. There is speculation that the nursery rhyme, Little Miss Muffet was written at the house by Dr Muffet (1553-1604), a famous entomologist in the late 16th century, for his daughter Patience Muffet.
The Birch is another pub steeped in awards, as it was recently named the country dining pub of the year by the Good Pub Guide. It is a family owned bar and restaurant set on the outskirts of the historic market town of Woburn. They serve quality fresh food, accompanied with specially selected real ales and fantastic choice of wine in a comfortable and modern environment.
Property nearby… The Willows lies on the edge of The Woburn Estate. As well as the main house, the property includes a self-contained annexe. Beautiful landscaped gardens surround the house, and there is a long established rent agreement for two adjoining paddocks.
