Foodie Britain: live near the best restaurants, bakeries and delis

An award-winning restaurant, cosy pub or highly-regarded bakery can make a home even more appealing. Walking across the fields to buy delicious fresh croissants at the weekend or strolling home from the village pub is a dream for many of us. We discover the top 10 homes near the best new eateries.

1. Brighton: 64 degrees and Brunswick Terrace

This Brighton flat combines the glamour of living on the seafront with the convenience of an incredible restaurant within walking distance.

64 degrees is a dining experience commended at the most recent National Dining Awards. Known for its industrial look, this small restaurant packs plenty of flavour into its small plates. Each meal is prepared by chefs in an open kitchen, who create an evolving menu of tasty meals using fresh, local produce.

2. Cambridge: Midsummer House and Roebuck House

Roebuck House is a unique find. It has the look, feel and land of a country home with eight bedrooms, but has a great position in Cambridge. It has its own river frontage and mooring and is within easy reach of the historic Cambridge city centre with all its amenities, attractions and mainline railway station.

A short stroll down the River Cam is one of the best fine dining restaurants in Cambridge. 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of this eatery with views of the river and Midsummer Common. In their refined main dining room, they serve set menus of five courses at lunchtime and eight courses in the evening. It has received many accolades, with a Michelin star awarded in 2002, followed by a second in 2005.

3. Abergavenny: The Walnut Tree and Cross Ash

This pretty Welsh cottage is a fantastic countryside retreat, situated on the outskirts of the popular village of Cross Ash, eight miles from the market town of Abergavenny and nine miles from Monmouth. It has grounds of just under an acre of well-maintained gardens

Less than a mile away, down the twisting Old Ross Road, is The Walnut Tree. It is the perfect pub to escape to at the weekend, though it is no ordinary purveyor of a weekend roast dinner. The Telegraph described it as “a legend among British restaurants” and acclaimed its ability to offer food of an incredible quality in an informal setting.

4. Birmingham: Edgbaston and Loaf

Set in an exclusive road in the affluent and upmarket area of Edgbaston and close Birmingham City Centre is this unique six-bedroom detached family home with plans drawn up for a significant leisure suite to the rear of the property. Downstairs there is a library, study, a drawing room and a family playroom.

Dreaming of fresh bread at the weekend? Take a quick drive or a winding walk to Loaf, a popular bakery and cooking school in Birmingham. At their bakery shop, you can buy fresh loaves, cakes, and pastries, or pick up a baking book. It’s a social enterprise, so all of their profits are reinvested into the community.

5. Surrey: Lower Kingswood and Chalk Hills Bakery

This lovely country home is set in 9 acres of land and has so much to offer, whether it's the equestrian facilities, including 7 loose boxes and hacking on the doorstep, the all-weather tennis court, the gym or even the swimming pool complex with changing rooms, hot tub, and sauna.

In the Jesmond area of Newcastle, a walk along the Town Moor from Gosforth, is the popular Dene’s Deli. It has been serving lunch to hungry residents for over 25 years. They started off simple and added some more unique items to their menu over the years, but sandwiches remain at their heart. Customers are encouraged to completely customise their order, with their favourite amount of what they like.

8. Cotswolds: The Kings Head and Upper Rissington

Occupying the most secluded and sought-after position within Upper Rissington are the original Officers’ houses, built during the 1940s when the village was a new airbase and flying school. The local pub is something special: it has been named Pub of the Year 2018. The Kings Head is in the nearby village of Bledington and has bantams and ducks roaming around outside. Inside, the popular pub food has an up-market twist. The bar has popular local ales on draft, a good wine list, and board games to keep the children entertained. Locals visit regularly, so it’s a great way to get to know the neighbours.
