Watch Part 3 of our awareness campaign as we delve into the complexities of homelessness and why resolving the crisis is not as simple as putting someone in a flat.
Sean from London recently moved into temporary accommodation and explains how his 18 years on the streets has effected how he will react when he has his own home.
Why would someone return to the streets?
There is an important transition which takes place from living on the streets for decades to living alone in a flat. Homeless people form communities and routines. However, when someone is placed in a flat, their lifestyle is suddenly altered.
Loneliness is the most common factor for someone returning to the streets; it is safe and familiar. Four walls may seem like the most sensible option to anyone who hasn’t lived on the streets, but for many it is confining and terrifying.
Triple A: Attitude
There are three elements to our awareness campaign: Attitude, Adversity and Action. Each person living on the streets has their own story and hardships to overcome before they can live independently, hold down a job and stay off the streets. Understanding this is the first step to helping someone transform their lives for good.
Triple A: Adversity
This section has covered the adversities involved in getting someone off the streets in the long-term. Ongoing support is the key to long-term solutions. Increasing numbers of homeless charities offer support for at least six months after their service user has moved into accommodation. This support can come in many forms: counselling, group workshops, employment advice, educational courses and activities to integrate into the local community.
Triple A: Action
Visit your local homeless charity to learn about their methods of long-term support. Sharing knowledge is a huge part of finding what works and doesn’t work in communities and the reasons behind this.
