North-East Hampshire and South Berkshire - Area Information

Located some 45 miles west and south-west of London, lying between the towns of Reading, Basingstoke and Newbury is the not often referred to area of North-East Hampshire and South Berkshire, home to beautiful English countryside and idyllic villages stretching across nearly 80,000 square acres. Served by excellent transport with the M4 and M3, rail links into London via Paddington and Waterloo, Heathrow is around 40 miles and the same distance to the cross-channel ferries at Southampton, the area has become highly sought after with those wanting to live life and raise their families in a greener, more rural natural environment without wanting to compromise on lifestyle, communications, education and leisure.

The village pubs and country inns are all there to be enjoyed, along with some of the south-east’s best rated gastro pubs as well as Michellin starred restaurants just outside Reading and Newbury. Outdoor activities naturally abound and range from the hundreds of miles of footpaths and bridleways that criss-cross the area, to the equestrian centres, boating lakes, narrow boats on the canals, country parks and access to areas of outstanding natural beauty. This is an area where muddy boots, damp dogs, open fires and good friends are the norm.

Educational needs are well served with an excellent range of independent, grammar, primary and secondary state schools with ‘good’ and ‘outstanding Ofsted ratings.

Across the villages and countryside, you will find an array of local shops, stores, farm shops and specialist suppliers for your daily needs, with the larger centres of Newbury, Basingstoke and Reading providing excellent retail facilities and of course the major supermarkets deliver to the door.

The choice of property size and style is both wide and varied, ensuring that all requirements and budgets are catered for. From the Grade II listed cottages, Georgian Manor Houses and Victorian Rectorys through to the property with acres of land and Equestrian facilities, established family homes with far reaching views, former Mills sat on the banks of the river and the newly built house awaiting its first owner – all can be had.

‘The ability to work from home, land, outbuildings, multiple generation homes, annexe’ – these are some of the key requirements for many of todays buyers, as are ‘walking distance of pub, shops, coffee shop, community and work-life balance, still need to be able to get to London’. This is an area where it may be possible to achieve it all.

It would not be easy to list all the villages, hamlets and areas here, but the major villages and centres include Crowthorne, Hartley Wintney, Hook, Mortimer, Aldermaston, Theale, Eversley and Bucklebury. But take a moment to drive down that country lane and you will find a hidden world of beautiful English countryside in which to live and enjoy.
