This handsome home, which originally dates back to c1860, occupies a superb position close to the heart of the charming Lincolnshire village of Barrowby. “The house was viewed and purchased from a local developer six years ago who was in the process of renovating and refurbishing the property, the description of an old Victorian property, refurbished and renovated to a high modern standard in a village location ticked all the boxes for us,” says the owner. “Despite the house at the time of viewing having been stripped back to its bare walls, we were able to visualise that it could be a wonderful home for our large family and so we bought and moved into the house in December 2013. On moving into the property we quickly identified areas that still required refurbishment and so over the time we have occupied the property we have further improved the house and its features to create a lovely family home, with a warm cosy feel, retaining its period charm, but at the same time bringing it right up to modern standards. “We replaced all the external doors and the windows, which had not been replaced during the renovation, replacing all windows with single-pane units with double glazed, European hardwood sash windows with a lifespan of around 60 years. We also laid new flooring throughout the house and changed the internal doors, the open fireplaces were replaced with more efficient multi-fuel burners, and we also removed the damaged fire surrounds and replaced them with beautiful Ancaster stone decorated surrounds.

“The garden has also undergone quite the transformation as we had it redesigned and beautifully landscaped just a couple of years ago – and it’s been designed with ease of maintenance in mind. It has been planted with a boundary of laurels which over the six years we have lived here have become well established. We love the wild meadow grass area around the seat at the bottom of the garden, which comes to life in early spring and throughout summer, and the patio is another favourite spot as it’s south facing and therefore enjoys sunshine throughout the day. I’d say that both the house and gardens are natural entertaining areas; we’ve hosted dinner parties and drinks events with a large number of guests, and never got the feeling of being on top of one another. The garden terrace is a particularly lovely place to entertain with a nice BBQ on a summers evening.”

Favourite Room: “The kitchen-and-family room is where we spend a lot of time cooking, chatting, watching TV and eating as a family, however we all have favourite rooms. The garden room is where you can escape and sit quietly overlooking the garden and still get the benefit outside of the summer months of the warmth of the sun in the autumn and spring with a good book and a cup of coffee, the cinema room is another good well used family room; a rainy Sunday spent in there with the fire going and a good family film is an absolute joy. The house has been installed with a high-end central smart home system to allow for music, TV, etc to be accessed throughout the house from iPads and wall controls so there is cabling throughout the home for anyone to adopt the central system if they so wished.”

Favourite aspect of the grounds or surrounding area: “Barrowby is a lovely, very peaceful village and exceptionally well maintained. It has a good local primary school, a local post office and a local butchers shop. There is also a public house, The White Swan and a coffee shop / bistro “Dougies Cakehole”. It has a really friendly community and the park allows the younger children in the village to get together and make friends in a very safe environment. We also enjoy easy access into London – it’s just an hour by train – and Grantham town is only three miles away and boasts a fantastic array of shops and amenities that cater for everyday needs. It’s a location that I’d say would be hard to better.”

Unique feature: “The house has had a really interesting history. It’s believed to have housed some of the operations for the Dam Buster raids, and it also received a telegram during the Second World War that should have been sent to The White House in America! We’ve also been told by a local historian that it housed the inaugural Royal British Legion headquarters, but we are unsure if this is true as we have never really followed it up.”

What they’ll miss most: “I can honestly say that we will miss absolutely everything about this house,” says the owner. “It’s been a real labour of love to create the perfect family home and we now have to face the distinct possibility that we will be unlikely to find anything like it again. To say we have loved (and still do) this house is an understatement. It will be utterly heart wrenching to say goodbye, but this is a relocation move out of the area and we sadly can’t take the house with us – if we could, we wouldn’t hesitate.”

The property is located in the heart of Barrowby, a sought-after village located a short distance from the magnificent Belvoir Castle. There is a variety of high quality secondary schooling in the district including two excellent grammar schools for both girls and boys in nearby Grantham. The National Trust’s Belton House is also located a short distance away. Commuters are well served by Grantham’s high-speed rail network to London Kings Cross. (Approximately 65 minutes)
