We looked at an array of houses and decided that we’d love to own a barn conversion, but it was hard to find exactly the right property in the right location, and then we came across Oak Tree Barn. The house sits at the end of a very long driveway and the land, which extends to around two and a half acres, is mostly to the front of the house so it’s positioned well away from the road. We have the golf course as our neighbour and we’re surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside, and yet we’re just a matter of minutes from the city centre so we really do enjoy the very best of both worlds. It’s a location that I’d say would be hard to beat.”

“The barn was converted back in 1996, but the previous owners had renovated the whole property not long before we came here so it was all in excellent condition. We have refurbished the cloakroom, replaced windows and doors, added a gorgeous new garden room, installed energy efficient air source heat pumps and brand new boiler (in place of the old oil heating system) and improved the courtyard patio area. It’s a house with lots of character, particularly the kitchen and lounge, which both have stunning vaulted ceilings and lots of original features, and there’s also a really nice feeling of space throughout. For us it’s been absolutely perfect, but there’s definitely scope for the new owners to put their own stamp on it. For instance, there are three outbuildings attached to the house, one of which is a home gym, but the other two could be turned into just about anything.”

“One of the things that we’ve loved most about living here is the utter peace and privacy,” continues the owner. “The house is set way back from the road and our land stretches out in front of the house so you just feel miles from anywhere. The house itself is U-shaped so we have a very pretty and very sheltered courtyard, which is a lovely place to sit out, relax and entertain, and the rest of the land is laid to grass and edged with some magnificent mature oak trees. It’s a lovely outlook and it’s nice to know that it all belongs to the property so can never be spoilt.”

“The kitchen, which has the most beautiful vaulted ceiling and some original barn features such as the animal feeding troughs, is probably my favourite room in the house, and it’s one of the features that I fell for the very first time we came to view the property. It’s very large, light and bright, and it’s the real heart of the home.”

“It’s the sheer tranquillity of our surroundings that I think I’ll miss the most,” says the owner. “Being able to sit out in the courtyard in the summer just listening to nothing but the trickling water in the pond has been absolute bliss. I can’t imagine there are too many places quite so lovely.”
