The current owners bought and renovated their home two years ago. “We wanted to maintain the character of this beautiful, historic stone barn but develop the interior into a light, spacious, contemporary home. We needed a home that would suit modern family living, so it needed to offer lots of space and be low maintenance. And we also wanted to ensure it created a great first impression for visitors, so we created a spacious hall with galleried landing and added a vestibule with glazed vaulted ceiling to let light flood in.”

Indeed, the whole ground floor of this beautiful home is flooded with light. “We wanted our home to feel light and airy throughout the year and to be able to move seamlessly between indoor and outdoor living spaces. The barn is L shaped, so we created a lovely terrace which encircles the lawn as it flows past the kitchen, sitting room, and onto the outdoor entertaining space. To make the most of the outdoor space, and to let light flood into the house, we chose to glaze the kitchen area with bi-fold doors and one complete wall of the formal sitting room with sliding doors. It’s such a safe space for the children to play, and we really enjoy entertaining family and friends, particularly for BBQs in the summer.”

“Our children are very clear as to which is their favourite room in the house. For them, it is definitely the playroom, with its two-storey wooden playhouse which we created especially for them. For us, it’s hard to choose between the open plan living space and the formal sitting room. The living space encompasses our kitchen, dining, and seating areas which we wanted to feel spacious and uncluttered, and it really has proved to be somewhere the whole family could enjoy. We love its sleek monochrome design and huge breakfast bar; it really works well us. The formal sitting room is much more traditional, but we think, just as beautiful, with a handsome stone fire surround, a wood burner, vaulted oak beamed ceiling, and a chandelier as a centrepiece. The added bonus is being able to walk out onto the terrace and garden from either the kitchen or the sitting room.”

Hodson’s Barn lies at the heart of the conservation village of Navenby which, despite it’s rural location, is home to a thriving community. “We are very lucky to be adjacent to the High Street of Navenby and yet be so private. And this is such a great place to live if you love the outdoors with walks along the cliff, or down into the Trent valley.”
