About this property:
Situated just twenty-seven miles from the city centre of London is the charming village of Stanford Rivers, a picturesque place that’s peppered with beautiful period homes and surrounded by glorious rolling countryside.
Orchard Barn is an extremely attractive barn conversion that occupies splendid location in the centre of the village. The barn once formed part of the Stanford Hall estate, and was originally an old agricultural building that would have been used for storing farm machinery, and interestingly the garden was once the orchard that also belonged to the Hall, hence the name of the house.
In terms of the house itself, it was in fairly good condition when the current owners bought it, but the finish wasn’t great so during their time here they’ve made quite a few changes. They added a large front extension and opened up a wall between the kitchen and adjacent dining room to create a lovely big open-plan space, they installed brand new kitchen units, updated the bathrooms and also fitted large sets of bi-folding doors in both that open-plan area and the main living room, so you can really make the most of the superb views right the way across the garden to the skyline in the distance. They also created a little self-contained ‘studio apartment’ at one end of the house, which is great for guests.
Sellers Insight:
I purchased the property back in 2007, and I’d say there were a number of things that attracted us to it. The location was obviously a huge draw; it’s semi-rural so it’s incredibly peaceful here, and yet also very convenient. We have Chipping Ongar, which is a lovely market town, just three miles down the road; we’re almost equidistant between Epping and Brentwood, so we have access to both Underground and Overground trains, and the motorway links are also really good, so it’s possible to jump in the car and be in the centre of London in under an hour.
The house is just lovely, but one of the features of the property that proved to be another huge attraction when we initially came across it was the garden. It’s a huge space and we’ve had a heated swimming/jacuzzi pool installed so during the summer months we tend to spend most of our time outside. And it’s made all the more appealing by the fact that the whole property is completely surrounded by a high wall also gated so we’re afforded a superb degree of privacy.
We’ve had twelve very happy years in this house; it’s such a beautiful family home and the location is superb. In terms of what I’ll miss, I suppose it will be the utter peace, tranquillity and the sheer beauty of these lovely surroundings.
