7 Bedroom Detached House For Sale in Fort Road, Broadstairs, CT10 1EY

4 7 5 2 Land Size: 0 acres

This unique Grade II Listed property is the most iconic building in Broadstairs. Steeped in history this amazing castellated marine residence with magical views across Viking Bay is well known as Charles Dickens’ favourite holiday home and where he wrote some of his most popular works, including parts of David Copperfield. This fascinating mansion was originally built in 1801 and was named Fort House but almost doubled in size a hundred years later when further additions and extensions were incorporated. The name was changed to Bleak House early in the 20th century to recognise the association with Dickens. Bleak House would make a stunning and memorable family and inter-generational home or a top quality boutique hotel, bed and breakfast and/or wedding venue. It could provide flexible accommodation to suit a variety of requirements and currently includes some truly awe inspiring period features such as original oak herringbone flooring, ornate coved ceilings, picture rails, high skirting boards, leaded light windows and the very impressive main entrance with its atrium style front door. This leads from the porch to the reception hall with its magnificent original Georgian staircase, ornate ceiling and superb wood surround fireplace and from here you can access the three truly delightful reception rooms including the magnificent formal dining room and bar. The attractive bar has a curved backdrop with charming stained glass windows while the dining room itself includes a beautiful wood surround fireplace and a large bay window with views across the terrace and garden to Viking Bay. The elegant light and bright drawing room also has wonderful views across the garden to the beach through the large bay window but on a cold winter’s evening you can enjoy sitting around the magnificent fireplace. There is another equally large reception room that also includes a lovely fireplace and a veritable wall of original windows and a door to the side patio. There is a utility room/pantry and a very large open plan kitchen/dining and sitting room that is ideal for relaxed day to day family living. This area leads to the ‘North’ or rear door of the property as well as to an inner courtyard. Beyond this courtyard is a separate apartment that currently consists of a living room, bedroom and also substantial storage rooms and the large garage leading to the driveway that provides off road parking for about four vehicles. However it should be possible to convert the garage and storage rooms into additional accommodation if required and subject to the appropriate planning permissions.  Leading off the galleried landing with its stunning ornate ceiling, you will find Dickens’ study and the Charles Dickens bedroom suite and a family bathroom while on the other side of the building there is the fascinating master bedroom suite with its opulent en suite bathroom and dressing room and two further double bedrooms both with en suite shower rooms. On the second floor there is a family bathroom and three double bedrooms as well as a parapet roof terrace providing panoramic vistas as far as Deal and, on a clear day, even across to France.  For something truly unique you can wander down to the fascinating Smuggler’s Museum on the lower ground floor. It really is something to behold and will take you back to the early 18th century when Broadstairs was a real haunt for smugglers.  Surrounding the garden is a high flint wall, tall trees and shrubs providing privacy and security. There is a large lawn that would be ideal for croquet or would make an excellent spot for a wedding marquee. Beside the lawn is a roofed loggia with an attractive wrought iron balustrade and in front of the house is a large patio for al fresco dining with steps leading down to further terraces.

“I bought this amazing property in 2005 as a family home as  we realised it was something very special in a stunning location. Over the years we thoroughly enjoyed it as a family home but in 2012 we decided to turn it into a very sophisticated bed and breakfast as well as a wedding venue. It proved very popular and we had two licensed rooms for ceremonies as well as a restaurant, bar and tea room. We could seat 65 guests for a wedding in the house or have room for 200 in a marquee in the garden.  However in recent times it has reverted to being a home for family members but we now feel that, owing to my deteriorating health and the next generation flying the nest, it is now too big for us and we would like another family to enjoy it as much as we have. Whether someone is looking for the ultimate and unique seafront home or would like to develop a business, this fabulous historic property can provide a variety of amazing opportunities.  Broadstairs is a delightful place to live and as a holiday retreat. It includes a number of beautiful sandy beaches from the picturesque Viking Bay and Louisa Bay to the Blue Flag Stone Bay and Joss Bay with its surfing centre. There are lovely clifftop walks and cyclists can enjoy some or all of the Viking Trail from Ramsgate to Reculver. Golfing enthusiasts can play at the renowned North Foreland Golf Club on the outskirts of Broadstairs, while other sports including tennis, bowls, rugby and cricket that are played at clubs in the town. As a Victorian seaside town steeped in history there are annual events such as the Dickens Festival, Folk Week, Gala Day and the Food Fair as well as impressive firework displays. Another advantage of Broadstairs is that it includes some very good private and grammar schools and the station can whisk you to London on the high speed train in under an hour and a half. Apart from that, if you are looking for a bit of serious retail therapy there is the nearby Westwood Cross shopping centre as well as a casino and the Vue cinema complex.
