3 Bedroom Apartment For Sale in Mystole House, Mystole, Canterbury, Kent, CT4 7DB

2 3 2

For anyone looking for a unique rural retreat, this fascinating top floor apartment in the impressive Grade II* listed Georgian mansion, Mystole House, could be the answer. Approached via an extremely long private drive flanked by orchards you will be excited by your first glimpse of this beautiful country house with its array of sash windows, mellow brickwork, high chimney stacks and attractive entrance incorporating a curved stained glass skylight above the front door. Once you walk into the wide outer hall you seemed to have returned to the world of Jane Austen and Lord Byron, surrounded by features from a bygone era including high ceiling and cornices, dado rails, an attractive archway to the inner hall leading to the original oak staircase and access to the apartment front door.

Another staircase takes you up to the apartment that is really a story of two halves. There is a good sized landing with a large, walk in storage/coat cupboard and an eaves cupboard plus a modern kitchen with a partially vaulted ceiling. It was redesigned about two years ago and includes a small breakfast bar, a walk in larder, glossy white units with soft closing doors housing a Zanussi hob and double oven with space for a dishwasher, built in fridge and freezer and a window overlooking the stunning roof terrace. There is a modern shower room and a separate bathroom that were installed about four years ago and two double bedrooms including one with a double aspect double bedroom, fitted wardrobes and secondary glazed sash windows and another with a sloping ceiling.

The landing also includes a pair of beautiful old oak doors with inset leaded light windows. Open these and you walk into rooms with stunning features from a bygone era including the charming dining room with its unusual barrel ceiling and skylight as well as a wall and ceiling beam. There are steps up to a double bedroom with a fascinating divider that leads to a dressing area, then through glass access to a walk in wardrobe. On the opposite side of the dining room is an entrance to a superb sitting room that also has a barrel ceiling and ceiling beams as well as an original diagonal wind brace beam and a secondary glazed wash window. Heating is provided by discreet infrared panels on the walls with a variety of heat settings.

One of the truly special aspects of this fascinating apartment is the large roof terrace that is really like an outside room with stunning views across the rolling Kent countryside as far as the eye can see. Here you can spend hours just watching the landscape while enjoying al fresco dining, a barbecue with friends and family or just soaking up the sun.

The main house incorporates six apartments and there is a large cellar running the length of the property and each of the apartments have a section for storage. There is a plenty of off road parking available and a large communal garden. This is for the exclusive use of the owners and includes a vast lawn that used to be a tennis court and is interspersed with a variety of shrubs and trees. There is also a nearby vineyard. The property has a share of the freehold.

“I moved here 17 years ago because I fell in love with the apartment and the environment. Even now every time I drive up the private lane to Mystole House I feel so happy. However my circumstances have changed and, although it will be a wrench to leave, I am sure new owners will be able to enjoy the special delights available in this unique home.

Although it is out in the country and there are wonderful places to go for walks and it is only a few miles from Canterbury and is virtually equidistant between Chartham and Chilham villages and stations as well as being within easy reach of Ashford, Folkestone and Dover for access to London and the Continent or the coast for a day on the beach. Chilham with its beautiful buildings, friendly community, primary school, shops, pubs and tea rooms surrounding the historic 15th century village square, is a delight while Chartham has a good primary school, recreation ground, convenience store, post office and hairdresser as well as a couple of pubs.

The historic city of Canterbury includes a plethora of ancient buildings, lovely eateries and two theatres as well as a variety of high street stores and independent shops, recreational facilities such as a golf course and sports centre and two mainline stations including Canterbury West with the high speed train that will get you to London in under an hour. It also has excellent grammar schools as well as top class public schools and three universities”.

Historical note: Mystole House was built in the 18th century by Charles Fagge on the site of an earlier 16th century property built by John Bungey, Prependary of Christ Church Canterbury and his family owned it for the next century. The last family to own the estate as a single dwelling were the Pomfrets who purchased it in the late 1890s. During WWI it was used by the Royal Horse Artillery who stabled their horses at Mystole and it was commandeered by the army in WW11.
