4 Bedroom Semi-Detached House For Sale in Stour Street, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 2PH

This charming Grade II Listed Georgian townhouse close to the city centre in Canterbury was originally one of the offices for the adjacent tannery. When the tannery closed in the 1960s the cottages were converted into flats but in 2008 well known Faversham property developer Colin Strickland purchased the tannery building and the adjacent properties. He subsequently converted this property and its neighbours back into delightful period townhouses with a total renovation completed in 2011, but still retaining some attractive period features.

During the past few years the current owners of this property have gone one step further and extended the house, added some impressive modern accoutrements, making this lovely home particularly distinctive. The front door opens straight into a comfortable sitting room with engineered oak flooring, sash windows with modern shutters, a coved ceiling and a marble fireplace between mirrored walls. It includes a real fire that is just the place to cosy up to on a cold winter’s evening. There is a door to the inner hall with access to a downstairs cloakroom, the staircase and the simply stunning contemporary kitchen/breakfast room.

No expense has been spared in creating this superb family space with its large ceramic floor tiles and underfloor heating in the dining area. The kitchen has been hand built by a J Simpson, a top class joiner from Herne Bay. It includes a plethora of pale units housing a variety of appliances such as an Italian Barazza gas hob, a built in Smeg Cucina double ovens, a Miele dishwasher, an AEG fridge freezer and a Bosch washing machine. There are also central walnut units with a hard wearing Silestone worktop and a breakfast bar with an archway each side leading to the amazing light and bright extension.

This is currently in use as the dining room and any guests would be delighted to sit round the table and enjoy a meal as there are awe inspiring features wherever you look. These include the brick wall and arched openings that were the original back door and window, a large skylight providing plenty of additional natural light and an extremely impressive pair of high and wide, floor to ceiling sliding doors to the courtyard. As if that were not enough there is also a continuation of the kitchen units creating a bar with a wine fridge and a laundry area.

On the first floor there is a family bathroom with wonderful reclaimed period brass taps, a small double bedroom currently in use as an office that includes a mirror fronted cupboard and a good sized double with a ceiling rose, cornices and fitted wardrobes. There are two double bedrooms on the second floor including one with an en-suite shower room and the other with a fitted wardrobe and on the landing is a very large storage cupboard. Outside, the courtyard is an ideal space for a barbecue or just soaking up the sun and leads to a back gate with access to a large car parking space – a real bonus in the centre of Canterbury.

“We moved here from London in 2015 because we were looking for a special home in another vibrant city with easy access to all the facilities. Over the years we have been delighted to create the new kitchen, dining room and update the bathrooms but our needs have slightly changed so we hope new owners will enjoy everything this house has to offer. However we love Canterbury and will be staying in the city.

It has always been said that location is the key to any property and if you can add character and history then you have the whole package and this is very well illustrated with this delightful home in the very heart of Canterbury. It is a wonderful base for any visitors and tourists wanting to explore the delights of the city. However if you live there it is great to be able to stroll down the road to the shops, pubs and eateries as well as meeting friends and family for a coffee or a visit to the theatre without needing to take the car or even get on a bus. At the same time if you want to get to London the fast train from Canterbury West will transport you to St Pancras in under an hour and it is not far from the A2 for Dover and Folkestone for trips to the Continent.

As well as the cathedral there are a wide variety of other historic and interesting attractions to see including the Canterbury Norman Castle, the Canterbury Tales, St Augustine’s Abbey, Canterbury Heritage Museum, the Westgate, The Beaney House and the Canterbury Roman Museum. The city also has a wide variety of high street stores, individual shops and plenty of restaurants and bars as well as two mainline stations. It is home to two theatres, three universities and numerous state schools including three excellent grammar schools and a number of private schools such as the famous Kings School”.

Historical Note: The Williamson’s tannery was founded in the 1790s by Stephen Williamson and stayed in the family for numerous generations until it was acquired by Connollys in 1963. The Stour Street site was added in 1879 and, despite a serious fire in 1931 it thrived, providing upmarket leather for Connollys primarily for use in the growing car trade. Williamson’s leather could be found in Rolls Royce, Bentleys, Daimlers, Jaguars and even Ferraris as well as in the House of Lords. Grandson Stephen donated the Tower House and the gardens to the city council in 1936 and his wife Catherine became the first lady mayor of Canterbury and organized the city’s civil defence during WWII.
