“My late husband bought the house in the 1970s and I moved here with my children when we got married in 1982 but I have now decided to go and live near to my daughter. My husband was always fascinated with the history of the place and particularly the grounds. In fact over the years we have had some wonderful parties in the gardens that form part of the original landscape of Kearsney Court which was laid out in 1900. The communal gardens include one of the centerpieces of the entire estate – the Bastion. This is a semi circular garden with a central pool and, although it has now been grassed over, it is still possible to see the lines of the old gravel paths and flower beds as it was originally laid out.
Designing this parkland and garden was one of the first independent commissions for Thomas Mawson, the leading landscape designer of the early 20th century. The owner of Kearsney Court was Edward Percy Barlow, the founder of Wiggins Teape, the paper manufacture and the grounds were designed to provide an appropriate setting for the owner's new residence in the countryside. It was designed in the Arts and Crafts style and is almost a park in miniature with ambitious terraced gardens cascading down the hillside culminating in a magnificent canal with ornamental bridges and a boathouse set among mature trees, wider park-like grounds, a kitchen garden and appurtenances like stables and lodges. In fact Mawson himself viewed the commission as a great success, including several plates of the landscape in his series of books entitled 'The Art & Craft of Garden Making'.
Since the 1950s the rest of the grounds have become a public park known as Russell Gardens. It is Grade II Listed and the council have recently secured a £3million heritage lottery fund for the restoration of the gardens to Mawson's original design.
