“My late husband bought the house in the 1970s and I moved here with my children when we got married in 1982 but I have now decided to go and live near to my daughter. My husband was always fascinated with the history of the place and particularly the grounds. In fact over the years we have had some wonderful parties in the gardens that form part of the original landscape of Kearsney Court which was laid out in 1900. The communal gardens include one of the centerpieces of the entire estate – the Bastion. This is a semi circular garden with a central pool and, although it has now been grassed over, it is still possible to see the lines of the old gravel paths and flower beds as it was originally laid out.
Designing this parkland and garden was one of the first independent commissions for Thomas Mawson, the leading landscape designer of the early 20th century. The owner of Kearsney Court was Edward Percy Barlow, the founder of Wiggins Teape, the paper manufacture....
