This property is without doubt, exceptional! The Old Vicarage is a handsome and impressive four bedroomed property that has been totally renovated, extended and improved by the current owners to create a home of timeless elegance redolent with character features, up-dated to include contemporary design elements, and benefitting from modern-day comforts and conveniences.

It took great vision to restore The Old Vicarage which was in a poor state of repair when the current owners purchased the property 25 years ago. Refurbishment included new plumbing, updated electrics, added insulation, new timber windows - replaced as originals, a new Grant external boiler, underfloor heating to tiled areas, new luxury bath and shower rooms, a new gourmet kitchen with family room extension, as well as being totally re-decorated. The additions and extensions to the property reflect thoughtful design, superior workmanship and quality fixtures and fittings, marrying old with new seamlessly – even to the extent of matching the new external mouldings of the family room extension with the original period style mouldings of the main house.

The décor throughout is respectful of the historic provenance of the home, yet contemporary and timelessly elegant. The new gourmet kitchen with combined family room is the hub of the home, providing a well equipped place to cook, dine casually and relax in a room filled with light during the day, with the comfort and cosy ambiance of a contemporary wood-burner to enjoy on cool evenings. The large sitting room is ideal for social occasions with plenty of room to mingle, relax in front of the wood-burner, or enjoy the panoramic garden views from the large bay window. A more formal, traditionally styled dining room is large enough to seat a crowd for dinner, with the option of spilling into the comfortable garden room equipped with a wood-burner on slate hearth, where beautiful views of the gardens and grounds can be enjoyed to three sides. Four large bedrooms are graciously decorated and enjoy glorious views, two of which have luxury bath/shower rooms with a third shower room serving the two other bedrooms.

The landscaped grounds are captivating – stone walled beds and borders brimming with shrubs and perennials, sunny patios, extensive decking with a covered BBQ area alongside the entertainment centre. A path winds through the woodland alongside the Pontfaen Brook which encircles the western side of the property, gurgling over age-old rocks between fern and wildflower clad banks. A wonderful, large spring fed pond occasionally has visiting trout and otters finding their way to visit from the stream, and an impressive tiered deck nestled into the hillside with sunshine from noon ‘til night, overlooks the pond and beautiful managed woodland.

The Gwaun Valley – an ancient glacial melt water valley is an area of outstanding beauty running inland from Lower Town Fishguard towards The Preseli Mountains, and was created by torrents of meltwater from the retreating ice during the last Ice Age, leaving a verdant, steep-sided valley now part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The valley has a unique atmosphere and an abundance of wildlife and prehistoric sites. Also special is the peace, the quiet, the darkness and the stars – a true haven of tranquillity.

Birdlife is everywhere, darting over the ponds, at the edge of streams, soaring above grassland and thick oak woods, with a wide diversity of species including rare Red Kites, Buzzards, Dippers, Tree Creepers and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers to name but a few.

Nearby the Preseli Hills - a spectacular mountain range popular with walkers and cyclists features a web of winding lanes, bridleways, moorland and footpaths bright with all the vivid yellows and purples of gorse and heather. Carningli (Mountain of Angels) is a mystical mound above nearby Newport, with the nearest mountain Cerrig Lladron, rising up above the headlands with panoramic views of the whole of the Pembrokeshire coastline.

A short drive will take you to wide sandy beaches along the Pembrokeshire coastal path -Newport, Poppit Sands, and Whitesands in St Davids, as well as small harbours, quaint villages and secret coves for which this part of the world is famous. Rock pooling, paddling, swimming, surfing and coasteering are all nearby.

The coastal towns of Newport and Fishguard are less than 5 miles distant and provide local amenities, excellent restaurants, tea houses & coffee shops, butchers, bakers and fishmongers as well as doctors surgeries and dentists: Fishguard also has regular trains to London Paddington, and a secondary school, while there’s a primary school in the valley. Cardigan, the largest local community has a wonderful theatre and cinema and St David’s Cathedral holds concerts and exhibitions; there are lots of creative activities in the area.

A former vicarage of 1903-4, built to designs by George Morgan & Son of Carmarthen for Percy Arden of Pontfaen. The design with Arts and Crafts elements is clearly the work of J. Howard Morgan, bearing similarity to his chapels such as local Jabez of Pontfaen where the same design in the vicarage hallway was used when laying the encaustic floor tiles in the vestibule. They also share the same portico design.

An affixed metal plaque recording the building date, vicar and donor still adorns the portico proudly recording the property’s historical provenance. The Church sold the property to a private owner in 1978.

The Old Vicarage was declared a Grade II listed building in 2003 due to special historic interest as the building was 100 years old, and because of the architectural significance of the portico and the staircase.

Approached via a quiet valley lane, two pillared and gated entrances lead to the former vicarage. One provides access to the rear of the house, the coach house and entertainment centre, with the second entrance leading to the spacious parking area, lawn and gardens to the front of the house. Immediately one is impressed by the stately elegance this substantial home exudes, and the beauty of the landscaped gardens with the woodland backdrop.

Providing shelter on entry between two large columns with low side walls, curved cornice and tiled floor this handsome porch is a Grade II listed portico with a bronze plaque recording the building date, vicar and donor proudly displayed on the pediment. The original door is half-glazed with an attractive leaded feature.
