“We have always enjoyed old, beamed houses and we just fell in love with the place the moment we saw it. However, we feel it is time to start a new chapter our lives and hope another family will get as much pleasure out of this superb home as we have.
We really adore Sandwich. It seems to have the atmosphere of a large and friendly village and provides a real sense of community. One of the great delights is that we can walk everywhere locally whether we want to go out in the evening or pop down to the town centre for some groceries. As well as its history the town is awash with delightful individual shops providing anything from designer clothes to unusual cheeses and art galleries to antique shops. There are also some delicious restaurants and historic pubs as well as a nearby farm shop.
On a sunny day there is nothing better than sitting by the river and enjoying the fresh air. For boating enthusiasts there is an excellent boatyard and mooring along the river....
Steeped in history this amazing and unique oak framed Grade II property in Sandwich’s Conservation Area with its origins dating back to the 13th century is something really special. Even its name – Bayze House – offers a hint of its illustrious past as the home of a wealthy merchant in the Middle Ages whose fabrics from around the world arrived by ship at the adjacent jetty in the days when the Cinque Port of Sandwich was actually a sea port and warships and merchant ships moored up at the quayside. More recently it incorporated a ground floor shop opening onto Strand Street but is now a stunning family home with the entrance through an historic arched oak front door in Love Lane. This opens into the awe inspiring dining hall where you will find a plethora of exposed ceiling beams, the staircase and a beamed fireplace with a gas effect log burning stove.
This room leads to the gorgeous country style kitchen/breakfast room with its built in double oven, Aga range cooker and gas hob inset into the most stunning brick fireplace as well as stable doors to the courtyard garden. Here you can enjoy al fresco dining in the lovely sun trap or alternatively, as it has large wooden gates onto Love Lane, it could be used for off road parking. The old shop has now been converted into a utility room and an office with its original ‘shop’ windows, very old beams as well as the historic King Post and secondary entrance onto Strand Street. This could be very useful for anyone working from home as clients and business visitors can come in via Strand Street and not go through the private part of the house. Indeed, there is space for a toilet in the utility area so this area could be used for commercial purposes, subject to the necessary consents. Strand Street formed part of the original quayside to the property in the Middle Ages when Sandwich was one the premier ports of England.
On the first floor you will find a stunning drawing room with wall and ceiling beams, a lovely brick fireplace and stairs to the top floor. There is also a sizeable but cosy beamed sitting room where the family is likely to congregate in front of the inglenook fireplace with its log burning stove. This leads to a double bedroom with a vanity unit and en suite cloakroom as well as an attractive seating area and through a glass pane you can see the original doors where the fabrics were lifted up from the ships. The large vaulted and beamed ceiling above the landing on the top floor is a true delight. Here you can sit and read a book or just relax in the peace and quiet. It leads to the master bedroom with its en suite bathroom, the contemporary family bathroom and two further double bedrooms, one with an en suite cloakroom.
